DELHI, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup with SUNY-Delhi on Sunday afternoon, falling 77-63 to the Broncos in road action.
Castleton (3-4) outshot the Broncos (4-2) by six percentage points—44.2 percent to 38.0 percent—but SUNY Delhi's 20 second-chance points by way of 21 offensive rebounds was a difference-making margin in the contest. Castleton had one of its best games of the season from three-point range, hitting 5-of-11 from deep, while making 12-of-19 at the line. The Broncos finished with a 48-38 edge on the glass and won the turnover battle handily, with Castleton committing 13 to Delhi's four.
Carter Mackey and
Alex Blackmore had 15 points each for Castleton, while
Tray Wright and
Brandon Cahill added eight points apiece. Cahill was 4-of-6 shooting in his first action of the season. Mackey also led the team with nine rebounds, coming up one board shy of a double-double.
John Walsh and
Patrick Forstmann had seven points apiece.
The Broncos had five players in double figures, led by 23 points from Lester McCarthy. Mavenson Therneus had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and Isiah Barnes added 12 points with seven assists. Jacob Beach had 11 points and Pablo Quinones had 10.
SUNY-Delhi took a quick lead on the opening possession before Castleton tied the game with two free throws on the other end. On the ensuing possession, Barnes netted a layup for the Broncos to put them in the lead—an edge that would not be relinquished from there despite Castleton threatening on multiple occasions. Late in the first half, Castleton went on an 11-0 run to pull within a point, 27-26, but a six-point run to end the half for Delhi sent the home side to the locker room leading 33-26.
Delhi worked the lead to double digits in the second half, but Castleton came within seven points with seven minutes to play when Walsh converted a three-point play for the Spartans. That was as close as Castleton could get late in the contest, with Delhi pulling away over the final seven minutes to end the game on top 77-63.
Castleton hosts Rhode Island college on Saturday in the first Little East Conference game of the season at 4 p.m. in Glenbrook Gym.
