SALEM, Mass. – The Castleton women's hockey team used three unanswered goals to defeat Salem State, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena.
The Spartans (4-2-0, 2-2-0 NEHC) put together their third consecutive three-score contest, dominating the second period on goals from Brooke Greenwood, Emily Harris, and Samantha Lawler. Darby Palisi picked up a pair of assists while Julia Carpenter and Miranda Wheeler earned one helper apiece. In her first career game between the posts, Clare Simon claimed the victory with 19 saves and a lone goal surrendered.
Nearly the entire opening period was penalty-free, until a cross-checking penalty toward Rachel McNeil put the Vikings (1-4-1, 1-4-1 NEHC) up a player. The home team capitalized on the late advantage as MacKenzie Mallett fired the day's first score with 34 seconds to play.
A tripping penalty on Salem State in the second period's fourth minute spurred a power play for the Spartans who evened the game at 1-1 off the stick of Greenwood. Although the on-ice situation returned to normal, the Spartans continued to penetrate the Viking half as Harris sent the go-ahead goal through for her first of the season. In the stanza's waning moments, Lawler caught a delivery from Palisi to send in an insurance score to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
The Spartan offense sent 13 shots on goal in the third period as Castleton fired double-digit shot totals in all three sessions. On the opposite end, Simon held her ground on four on-target attempts to collect her first career win.
Next time on the ice, the Spartans are close to home with a non-conference match at Middlebury on Tuesday, November 22 at 4 p.m.
