CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's basketball team extended its season-opening winning streak to three games on Sunday evening, racing past UMaine-Farmington 71-38 in non-conference action at the Spartan Classic.
Castleton (3-0) shot 38.5 percent as a team (25-of-65) from the field and made 5-of-17 from three. UMF (0-2) made just 14-of-56 shots on the day while shooting 5-of-18 from three. Castleton won the rebounding battle 47-40 with a 14-10 edge on the offensive glass. The margin led to a 16-4 edge in second-chance points. UMF had 23 turnovers to Castleton's 13 with the Spartans scoring 29 points off Beaver miscues.
Liz Bailey led the Spartan offense with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games this season. She also had four blocks on the night.
Elise Magro added 12 points with five assists and four steals, while
Gwyn Tatton amassed 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Kelly Vuz had 11 points and five rebounds with four assists and
Felicia Poirier added eight points and seven boards. Magro and Tatton were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts on the weekend.
Farmington's Grace Dwyer was also named to the All-Tournament team thanks in part to a 13-point day on Sunday. She also had a pair of steals against the Spartans. Jalyn Stacey and Rosalie White tallied seven points apiece with Stacey grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds. Maddy White had six points and eight rebounds.
A tight first half that saw Castleton lead 32-26 at halftime turned into a game that favored the Spartans heavily in the third quarter as Castleton outscored Farmington 29-5 out of the halftime break. Castleton scored the first 12 points of the quarter, eight of them coming on layups from Bailey. A single free throw by Farmington stopped the scoreless streak, but Castleton tacked on seven more points consecutively from there to push the lead to 51-27. Castleton closed out the third on a 6-0 run as well to take a 61-31 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The run extended to 11 points in total after a three from
Emily Adams splashed through the net in the fourth quarter to give Castleton a 66-31 lead. A layup four minutes later by Poirier gave Castleton its largest lead of the night, 70-33, before Farmington worked the score gap back to 33 points at the final horn, 71-38.
Castleton returns to action at the Granite City Shootout on Friday night at 5 p.m. against NVU-Lyndon at the Barre Auditorium.
