CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team hosted Eastern Connecticut State in an LEC matchup Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the Warriors in front of the home fans.
EastConn (6-4-2, 3-2 LEC) went on the attack early, racking up three corners and three shots in the opening 10 minutes, but nothing got past goalkeeper
Andres Soto-Burgos, who made five saves on the afternoon.
The Spartans (3-6-2, 1-2-1 LEC) tried to counter with some offense of their own, getting their first shot of the game on target at the 14-minute mark from
Jacob Barth, but it was the Warriors opening up the scoring in the 20
th minute to take the 1-0 lead.
With eight minutes left in the half Castleton settled into their offense, getting shots off from
Ayoob Musanovic and
Adolphe Alfani — including a near-goal with 10 seconds to go in the period — but could not convert, entering the break down one.
The Warriors continued to control pace of play in the second half and extended their lead to three on a pair of goals off corner kicks in the 64
th and 74
th minutes. Shots from
Lucas McCane and
Stanley Andersen tested EastConn's Nathan Yeich, but were turned aside. At the final whistle, despite a narrow deficit in shots on goal — 8-6 in favor of the Warriors — Castleton was held scoreless, suffering the 3-0 defeat.
