BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Castleton field hockey team utilized three scores in the first half against Bridgewater State to come away with a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon.
Kaitlin Bardellini led scoring with a pair of goals while Emily Harris put in her 30th goal of the year, tying the single-season record she set in 2021. Assists were given out by Chance Jaquin, Haley Corlew, and Peyton Richardson. The Spartans (11-7, 9-3 LEC) handily controlled the offense, out-shooting the Bears (2-15, 1-11 LEC) 26-7, holding the home team shotless for the first 30 minutes.
The Spartans found paydirt midway through the first quarter as Bardellini had the contest's first shot blocked, then scored on a helper from Jaquin. Just a minute later, the green and white struck again – this time it was Harris from Corlew as the Crondall, England native tied the Castleton all-time goals record.
The Spartan defense continued to suppress BSU into the second period, but the Bears' defensive front held tight against the high-powered Castleton attack. Three of the Spartans' four penalty corners brought scoring opportunities, but Bear goalie Madelyn Guidaboni grabbed three saves as the defense forced multiple off-target attempts.
Bardellini ended the scoring drought shortly after the halftime break with a 34th-minute strike from Richardson, putting the score at 3-0. This spurred the Bears' first shot of the day from Bailey Turner that flew wide. Castleton controlled possession for most of the quarter but the gap remained at three.
Guidaboni saved four Spartan shots within the first four minutes of the final period as the Bears began to rally. Bridgewater State got on the board with a Lexi James goal in the 57th minute, followed by a James score in the 59th minute. Down a goal, the Bears drew a penalty corner in the final minute. Zoe Bergeron took aim but the Spartans blocked the attempt to hold on for the 3-2 win.
The Spartans earned the third seed in the Little East Conference Championship Tournament and will battle Fitchburg State on Tuesday, November 1 at Dave Wolk Stadium. Pass back is slated for 1 p.m.
