DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Castleton women's soccer team traveled to face off against UMass Dartmouth in their final road game of the regular season Saturday afternoon, jumping out to a 2-0 lead before sealing the 2-1 victory — their fourth straight.
Becky Hannwacker and
Jamie Ledoux scored their first and second career goals respectively in the win for the Spartans (7-9-1, 4-2-1 LEC), while
Alex Benfatti tallied three saves in her seventh win of the season.
There was nothing to separate the sides in the opening 15 minutes, before Castleton put a barrage of shots on frame over the ensuing six minutes, three of which were turned aside by the Corsairs' Katherine Hubbard. In a half built around tdefense, it wasn't until the 44
th minute that the Spartans were able to break through on Hannwacker's first career score.
Lauren Fotter took a corner in the final minutes that was cleared just outside the box, but immediately sent back into the crowded 16 by
Gabrielle Knight. After defelcting off a UMass Dartmouth defender, the ball found its way to Hannwacker on the right side of the box, who sent it into the far corner with her weak foot to put the Spartans up 1-0 heading into the break.
The Corsairs (3-12-1, 1-6 LEC) came out on the offensive in the second half, registering three shots on net in the opening four minutes that were all turned aside by Benfatti. The Spartans, meanwhile, were able to capitalize on their third chance of the half via
Jamie Ledoux's second-game-winner in as many contests, extending their lead to two.
Castleton's lead was cut back down to one shortly after on a score from Emily Khang, but little tested the Spartans backline the rest of the way en route to the 2-1 win.
Castleton concludes their regular season Saturday, October 29 with a matchup against UMass Boston. Kickoff for the Spartans' Senior Day is at 4:30 p.m.
