CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's soccer team hosted UMass Dartmouth in their final home game of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Corsairs. The Spartans also celebrated their six graduating seniors prior to the contest.
Castleton (5-9-2, 2-4-1 LEC) was outshot 19-6 in the game with a 6-0 differential in shots on net.
Andres Soto-Burgos made four saves in the contest, setting a new career-best for the season with 84 across his 13 appearances.
Starting the match on the back foot, the Spartans had to fend off a myriad of UMass Dartmouth (2-9-4, 1-5-1 LEC) shots, but a series of defensive blocks sent several of the Corsairs shots either wide or safely into the hands of Soto-Burgos.
The visitors looked poised to take the lead in the final five minutes of the half, getting four shots off as well as two corners, but Soto-Burgos once again stood tall to keep his team level at the first break.
Castleton came out aggressive in the second half, racking up all four of their corners in the first 10 minutes, but it was UMass Dartmouth taking the lead in the 60
th minute on a turnover in the Spartans' half.
Both sides began to generate looks after the first score before the Corsairs doubled their lead in the 83
rd minute. Despite a change in gameplan from Castleton, the Spartans were unable to get another shot off, suffering the 2-0 loss at home.
Castleton will look to bounce back Sunday, October 23 with a non-conference matchup against NVU-Johnson. Kickoff for the road match is at 2 p.m.
