SALEM, Mass. – The Castleton women's tennis team wrapped up their season on the road against Salem State Saturday afternoon, falling 6-3 to the Vikings in their season-finale.
Salem State (3-10, 3-6 LEC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in doubles play with wins on first and third courts, but were put to the test against
Megan Brier and
Camille Jackson on Court #2. Playing together for the second time all season, the duo forced a decisive set before falling 8-7 to complete the Vikings' sweep.
Things were more tightly contested in singles play, as the Spartans (3-9, 1-7 LEC) split six matches with Salem, highlighted by convincing wins on Courts #3 and #5 by
Stella Forte (6-1, 6-1) and Jackson (6-1, 6-3). The win by Forte was her team-leading sixth on the season, including a perfect 3-0 record on third singles, bringing an end to an impressive rookie year for the freshman, while Jackson finishes her season with a team-best record of 4-2.
With the Vikings already claiming the team victory up 6-2, the final match of the day swung Castleton and
Madelyn Nonni's way. The freshman took the first set 6-3 before dropping set two 7-6, but was able to clinch her fourth win of the year with a 10-6 third-set victory.
This match concludes the women's tennis season, with playoffs for the top-6 conference teams set to begin next Tuesday, October 18.
