CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team suffered its second conference loss on a chilly Tuesday evening to Worcester State, 4-2.
The Spartans (7-6, 5-2 LEC) bested the visiting Lancers (9-4, 6-1 LEC) in shots 18-13 with eight attempts coming in the fourth quarter. Emily Harris scored both of Castleton's goals and Kaitlin Bardellini provided an assist. Bardellini fired a pair of shots on frame while Amelie Steinel and Genevieve Pitts each had on-target strokes.
Harris slammed home the contest's first score from the top of the circle, putting the Spartans ahead 1-0 within the opening five minutes. The Lancers bounced back late in the first quarter after Zoe Martin saved a shot from Karalyn Jones, then Molly Cutting sent a strike from deep that got through to tie it up.
Grace Adams, who had a shot on goal in the 18th minute, reentered after a short break and scored moments later on a wing pass from Karalyn Jones to give Worcester State the lead, 2-1. Martin saved another of Adams' shots as the Spartan defense flipped the field, funneling the ball into attacking territory where a corner was drawn. Lancer keeper Madison Ferrara saved a shot from Harris, who sent another wide. Following two unsuccessful WSU scoring attempts, the Spartans went into halftime down a goal.
Within two minutes, the Spartans stormed back as Harris put in her 22nd goal of the season, finishing off a Bardellini pass from outside the circle to even the score. The Lancers recouped and saw Charlotte MacGregor find Zoe Athenasopoulos in the circle to retake the lead in the 35th minute. Minutes later, Adams entered with fresh legs and scored the Lancers' fourth goal on a one-on-one with Martin after a feed from Natalya Morin. Four Spartan shots, two saved by Ferrara, kept the score 4-2 in favor of Worcester State entering the final 15.
Steinel found a chance 55 second into the fourth quarter, but Ferrara stood her ground and deflected the attempt near the post. Pitts sent a ball that was blocked, then another that was saved. Entering the game with the nation's fourth-best save percentage (.869), Ferrara saved three Harris attempts in the contest's final seven minutes. Martin prevented another score with 1:35 to go, but the Lancer defense also held sturdy and refused the Spartans a goal for the final 28 minutes.
The Spartans hit the road on Friday, October 14 for a matchup with Fitchburg State. Pass-back against the Falcons is set for 7 p.m.
