Women’s Hockey Completes the Sweep, Shuts Out Salem State 3-0 on the Road

SALEM, Mass. – The Castleton women's hockey team wrapped up their three-game road trip in dominant fashion Sunday afternoon, completing the regular season sweep over Salem State with a 3-0 shutout victory.

The Spartans got 31 shots on net, scoring once in each period, while Castleton goalie Izabella Segui put together her first career shutout, turning away all 18 Viking shots she faced.

The Spartans came out of the blocks aggressive, taking just under two minutes to open the scoring in Sunday's contest. Battling for position in Salem State's zone, Emily Harris won the puck in the corner before sending it around the board toward Darby Palisi. The junior faked out a Viking defender behind the net and found a cutting Julia Carpenter, who one-timed it past the Salem State's goalie and in to make it a 1-0 game.

Castleton (8-8-2, 6-5-1 NEHC) kept the pressure on to start the second, and would double their lead at the 3:29 mark. Courtney Gauthier won the puck behind the Vikings'net and sent it to the top of the zone for Alexandra Snow, who ripped it back toward goal. Taking a deflection off of Brooke Greenwood's stick, the puck trickled in front of net and under the glove of Salem State's keeper for the score.

Both teams traded blows in the third period before the Spartans struck once again, this time shorthanded. Playing a man down after Miranda Wheeler was called for a tripping call, Ryanne Mix dumped the puck into the Vikings' (3-16-0, 1-13-0 NEHC) zone. Gauthier was the first down the ice, combining with Greenwood once again to beat a Salem State defender before Greenwood rifled a shot into the top corner to give Castleton the 3-0 win on her second goal of the afternoon.

This was just the third shutout win of the season for the Spartans and first since their Oct. 30 victory over Rivier. Castleton will look to build on that momentum as they kick off a crucial four-game homestand with a matchup against Plymouth State Tuesday, Feb. 1. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
