Football Falls at St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Castleton University football team ran into a powerful St. Lawrence program on Saturday, falling 55-3 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

The Saints (3-1) took an early lead and never looked back, handing Castleton (2-2) its second consecutive loss. Castleton was outgained offensively 594 yards to 274, with SLU picking up 23 first downs and Castleton 17. The Spartans rushed for just 57 yards, while the Saints collected 267 yards on the ground.

Jacob McCarthy completed 24-of-36 pass attempts for 208 yards, but was intercepted twice in the loss. Anthony Martinez had a team-leading six catches, though Tucker Kreh had a career-high five catches and 62 yards receiving. Chance Fee, Wyatt Jackson and Evan Keegan all had four catches each. Devin Wollner had 29 yards rushing to lead the team, while Simon Davis Jr. added 15 on three carries.

Dawson Pierson led the Spartans with eight tackles, followed by Jayson Gilsinger and Jacob Gonzalez with five each. Spencer Kozlak had four tackles and an interception, and Quinten Asiedu had the only tackle for a loss for Castleton in the game.

St. Lawrence scored on its first drive of the game, using less than two minutes to get into the end zone. Facing a fourth-and-four, Peyton Schmitt broke off a 58-yard touchdown run to give SLU a 7-0 lead after the point after.

Castleton answered with a field goal on the ensuing drive, converting on one fourth down and two third downs to earn a first-and-goal from the Saints' seven-yard line. A completion to Alex Martellio moved the ball down to the four-yard line, but the drive stalled at that point and Noah Crossman knocked a 21-yard field goal through the uprights to make it 7-3.

The field goal was all the scoring the Spartans mustered in the contest, as St. Lawrence scored again on its next drive to go ahead 14-3. The Saints added 27 more points in the second quarter before scoring one touchdown in each quarter in the second half to make it a 55-3 final score.

Castleton returns to action next Saturday, October 2, in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference opener against Maritime (N.Y.) in Throggs Neck, N.Y. Kick-off is scheduled for noon.
