CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team couldn't generate any offense in their matchup against Skidmore Sunday afternoon, falling 8-0 to the Thoroughbreds and extending their losing-streak to three.
The Spartans (2-5, 1-1 LEC) showed a lot of promise early, moving the ball well and controlling the midfield to start, but it was Skidmore (4-2) who struck first five minutes into the game. On their second penalty corner of the frame, Sofia Marshall sent a shot toward the cage where Mariah Redler was waiting for the redirect, giving the Thoroughbreds the 1-0 lead on her sixth goal of the year.
Skidmore would double their lead in the second quarter off Redler's second score of the game, this time coming via scoop as she lifted the ball up and over Castleton goalie
Hannah Frittenburg to give her team a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The wheels came undone for the Spartans in the second half, as goals from Redler, Morgan Sickels and Carrie Hughes would extend the Thoroughbreds' lead to five halfway into the third quarter. With the game out of hand, freshman
Maddi Leduc checked in for Frittenburg, who ended her day with 12 saves on the 17 shots she faced.
A streak of three goals from Skidmore's Brooke Tunnicliffe starting in the third quarter and ending with under a minute to go in the game would put the Thoroughbreds up 8-0 and hand Castleton their third straight loss.
The Spartans will look to rebound Wednesday, Sept. 22 as they are back home to face off against The Sage Colleges. The game will be played at Dave Wolk Stadium with first-pass set for 7 p.m.
