Women's Volleyball Downed by USM, Fisher

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-0 matches in Glenbrook Gym on Saturday, falling to Southern Maine and Fisher College in straight sets.
 
The Spartans (3-5) were overpowered 25-21, 25-10, 25-17 in the opener against the Huskies before losing to Fisher 25-19, 25-13, 25-16. Southern Maine also beat Fisher in straight sets in a neutral site match as part of the day's events.  Castleton had 52 kills across two matches Saturday, while opponents racked up 71 in the same span. The Spartans were out-assisted 68-50, and suffered a 16-8 deficit in service aces.
                                                                   
Hailey Martinovich and Lizzie Goodrich had 13 kills apiece over the two matches, with Jessica Trudeau adding eight. Goodrich also had a team-high three aces on the day, while Martinovich tied Jen Halliday for a team-high with 21 digs. Bre MacDuff had 34 assists to lead all Spartans.
 
In the Little East Conference opener against Southern Maine, Goodrich had eight kills and an ace, while Trudeau compiled five kills in the match. Martinovich had four kills and nine digs.
 
Against Fisher in the nightcap, Martinovich led the Spartans with nine kills and added 12 digs. Halliday had a team-high 13 digs, while Martinovich and Mackenzie Bender had a pair of block assists together.
 
The Spartans return to action Thursday at New England College in a non-conference match with the Pilgrims. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
