Men's Soccer Downed by Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Castleton University men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 Little East Conference (LEC) loss to the hands of Rhode Island College Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The scoring began late in the first half as the Spartans (0-3, 0-3 LEC) fell behind. After the Spartans gave up a foul in a dangerous area, Anthony Recinos scored off of a Jonathan Oliveira free kick in the 30th minute to give the Anchormen (2-0, 2-0 LEC) a 1-0 lead.

The Anchormen doubled the lead shortly after as Oliveira placed a shot past goaltender Andres Soto-Burgos in the bottom right corner after receiving a cross from teammate Ryan Moniz. Oliveira went on to score a brace as he tallied the Anchormen's fourth goal of the game in the 81st minute of the second half.

Soto-Burgos earned the start for the Spartans as he played the majority of the first half. He finished the game allowing three goals while recording four saves in 42 minutes of action. Jonathan Maul and Alex Fernald also saw action as the duo recorded four saves between them.

The Anchormen tallied two more goals during the contest, which included an own goal given up by the Spartans and a solidifying 83rd-minute goal by Joseph Scolaro, allowed the Anchormen to cruise to a shutout victory.

Castleton returns to action Friday, April 30, as it takes on Eastern Connecticut State at Dave Wolk Stadium at 7 p.m.
