Baseball Drops LEC Road Doubleheader to Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Castleton University baseball team dropped a pair of Little East Conference (LEC) games to Rhode Island College Friday afternoon at Pontarelli Field.

Rhode Island College 19, Castleton 2 (seven innings)

The Spartans (8-10, 6-5 LEC) fell behind early, allowing five runs in the first two innings of play. Max Olmsted earned the start on the mound for the Spartans as he only lasted two innings as he allowed five runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. The Anchorman (13-8, 7-3 LEC) supplied the power as they scored their first five runs off of home runs. Nick D'Ambra recorded two long shots, first to give the Anchormen a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and then tallied a second in the bottom of the second inning, extending the lead to 5-0.

The Spartans tallied their first runs of the game as Reece de Castro led off the top of the fourth inning as Reece de Castro with a solo home run to center field. Zac Willis provided the other run, tallying a single as Evan Keegan scored from third base, cutting the lead to 11-2.

As the Anchormen went on to score seven more runs, de Castro led the way as he was the lone Spartan to record two or more hits. He was able to reach base a total of three times, recording two hits while also earning a walk in the top of the fifth inning.

Rhode Island College 14, Castleton 2 (seven innings)

De Castro once again provided the offense for the Spartans in the second game of the doubleheader. Trailing 7-0, de Castro laced a two-out double to center in the top half of the third inning. De Castro would later score to get the Spartans on the board as Keegan reached an error.

Aubrey Ramey earned the start on the mound for the Spartans, pitching three innings, allowing 10 hits while striking out three batters. Joseph Voli entered in the fourth inning in relief of Ramey as he pitched three innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and struck out four batters.

Castleton returns to action Saturday, April 24, as it takes on Rhode Island College in a non-conference matchup at Spartan Field starting at noon.
