PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team got back in the win column on Saturday evening, taking down Rhode Island College in Little East Conference play by a final score of 13-9 on the road at a rain-soaked Alumni Field in Providence, R.I.
Â
The Spartans (2-6, 1-3 LEC) jumped out to a fast lead, 4-0, but RIC stormed back to tie the score at 5-5. Castleton carried a 6-5 lead into halftime, and scored the first four goals of the second half to take a 10-5 advantage, enough to keep the Anchorwomen (1-4, 0-4 LEC) at bay and earn the Spartans their first LEC win of the season.
Â
Castleton outshot Rhode Island College 38-26, with a 27-18 edge in shots on goal. Â
Castleton came out of the gates firing, with Linn scoring unassisted twice in the first five-plus minutes of play to give Castleton a 2-0 lead. Linn then notched her lone assist in the game, finding Cote for the score to make it 3-0, before finishing off her hat trick in less than 10 minutes with her third goal of the game in just 8:16. Rhode Island College responded with three quick goals, striking three times in a three-minute span to make it a 4-3 game at the mid-way point of the half.
Â
Greenamyre stopped the RIC run with an unassisted goal of her own, but two more goals from the Anchorwomen leveled the score at 5-5 with just 5:18 left before halftime. With time winding down in the half, Castleton struck once more to secure the halftime lead, 6-5. Cote scooped up a loose ball in traffic and found a wide-open McCarthy on the doorstep for an easy score and a one-goal edge.
Â
Castleton continued to build momentum out of the break, scoring four times in the first 10 minutes of the second half to build a 10-5 lead. Mix got in on the scoring action, before McCarthy, Greenamyre and Linn added to the cushion for Castleton. A pair of goals by the Anchorwomen narrowed the lead back to three goals, 10-7, with 14:45 to play, but a three-goal run by Castleton featuring two goals from McCarthy—including one a player down—and one from Linn gave Castleton a comfortable lead, 13-7, with 4:38 to play. RIC notched a pair of late scores to cut into the gap, but it was too little, too late as the Spartans secured a 13-9 road win.

The Spartans are back in action at 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium when they host UMass Dartmouth for an LEC tilt.
