SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Castleton University baseball team dropped a 13-3 non-conference decision to Skidmore College Tuesday afternoon at the Castle Diamond.
Â
With
Max Olmsted on the mound for the Spartans, the Thoroughbreds jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of action. In the bottom half of the inning, a single by Jackson Hornung and a throwing error by
Addison Schaub gave the Thoroughbreds and 2-0 lead while a sacrifice fly plated another. Olmsted finished the game pitching two innings and gave up three runs (all unearned), one walk, and struck out three batters.
Â
Facing a reasonable deficit, the Spartans finally got on the board in the third inning. With the bases loaded,
Hunter Perkins crossed home plate on an error by the catcher Sam Browning, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Â
In a close game in the fifth inning, the Thoroughbreds broke the game open, scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. With
Joseph Voli on the mound for the Spartans, a walk with the bases loaded gave the Thoroughbreds a 4-1. A fielder's choice, two doubles, and a single extended the lead as the Thoroughbreds led 10-1 at the conclusion of the inning.
Â
The Spartans were able to get a run back in the top half of the sixth inning as
Evan Keegan started off with a single up the middle. After
Jack Miller was hit by a pitch, two straight walks plated a run for the Spartans as the Thoroughbreds led 10-2. The Spartans scored one more run the next inning, a
Reece De Castro double to left field, scoring Perkins.
Â
As the Spartans faced a 10-3 deficit, the Thoroughbreds added three more runs, ending the Spartans' chances of a comeback.
Â
