HARTFORD, Conn. – The Castleton University men's lacrosse team suffered a tough loss at Trinity (Conn.) on Saturday, falling to the Bantams by a final score of 31-2.
Trinity (1-0) controlled play from start to finish, outshooting Castleton (0-4) by a 76-23 margin, including a 54-12 edge in shots on goal. The Bantams were 2-for-3 on extra-man opportunities, while Castleton was 0-for-5. Trinity held a 59-18 edge on ground balls and were a perfect 11-for-11 on the clear, while Castleton went 9-for-14 clearing the ball.
Cam Frankenhoff scored both Castleton goals in the game, striking in the first quarter and fourth quarters for the Spartans. Chris Wilk played all 60 minutes in goal, racking up 23 saves between the pipes. It was the most saves for a Spartan goalie since Peter Latulippe made 25 saves against St. Lawrence in March of 2015. Chris LaBonte had a team-high seven ground balls, while Matt Mumford led the way with three caused turnovers.
Trinity was led by six points from Tyler DeSimone, all six of which came on goals. William Puccio and Connor McCulloch had five points each, Puccio on three goals and two assists and McCulloch on five goals. Eight others had multi-point games for the Bantams. Liam Tucker led the way in goal with eight saves for Trinity, while Spencer Beakey had two saves and Cooper Yaccino one.
Trinity ran out to a 7-0 lead over the first eight-plus minutes of the game before Frankenhoff found the back of the net to make it a 7-1 game. The Bantams rebounded from there, scoring five more goals unanswered before the end of the first quarter. Trinity added seven more goals in the second quarter before halftime, carrying a 19-1 lead into the break.
The second half continued to tilt the field toward Trinity, as the Bantams scored nine goals in the third quarter and three in the fourth compared to Castleton's one fourth-quarter score to finish the day on top, 31-2.
Castleton is back in action on Saturday, March 27, in the Little East Conference opener at Dave Wolk Stadium against Eastern Connecticut State University.
