EAST BURKE, Vt. – The Castleton University men's alpine team returned to action Tuesday for a pair of FIS giant slalom races, led by rookie Lorenzo Mencaccini's pair of third-place finishes in a field of 100 racers.
The freshman from Italy had his best single day of the season, finishing on the podium in both races on the day. Christopher Kerven logged 25th and 31st-place finishes on the day, while Carl Setterstrom and Evan Toman finished near one another in the opening race.
Mencaccini opened the day with a time of 1:55.40 after runs of 57.28 and 58.12 to finish just 1.24 seconds off the leader. Kerven followed with a time of 2:00.84 after times of 1:00.39 and 1:00.45. Setterstrom clocked in at 2:05.37 for a 42nd-place finish after runs of 1:02.32 and 1:03.05, and Toman rounded out the Spartan finishers with a 45th-place time of 2:06.34 on runs of 1:03.19 and 1:03.15.
In the second race, Mencaccini followed up with another third-place finish, posting times of 52.87 and 53.71 for a total time of 1:46.58—less than half a second from the leader. Kerven was Castleton's only other finisher in the race, posting a 31st-place result with a total time of 1:52.10 after runs of 55.90 and 56.20.
Castleton is back at Burke for two FIS Slalom races on Wednesday.
