NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Propelled by a game-winning goal by
Emily Harris in the overtime period, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team defeated Norwich 4-3 Saturday morning at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Spartans (3-1-1) took the lead early on as
Brooke Greenwood tallied her first goal of the season with just over a minute off the clock. Creating her goal-scoring opportunity, Greenwood batted in her rebound past goaltender Alexa Berg after collecting the puck in the Spartans' defensive zone.
The Cadets (0-1) responded quickly, leveling the score just 15 seconds later. After an icing call against the Spartans, the Cadets scored immediately on the draw as Carley Sedlar poked one over the shoulder of goaltender
Kirsten DiCicco at the 1:23 mark of the period.
DiCicco earned her second win of the season as she held her ground as the Cadets poured on the pressure throughout the entire game. DiCicco would finish the game with a career-high 39 saves in 61:16 minutes of action.
With the game tied after the first period, the Spartans regained the lead midway through the second period. While on the power play,
Samantha Lawler scored her first goal of the season at the 11:04 mark of the period. With both Lawler and
Ali Stevens camped out in front of the Cadets' net, Lawler was on the receiving end of a tipped pass from Stevens; sending the puck past Berg, giving the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.Â
The Cadets once again tied the game, this time late in the second period. At the 18:16 mark of the period, Melianne Reynolds redirected a pass from Ann-Frederique Guay at the slot and scored on the backhand.Â
After leading twice during the first two periods of play, the Spartans found themselves facing a deficit early on in the third period. At the 2:18 mark, Ingrid Holstad-Berge slid the puck into a fairly open net after DiCicco was unable to corral an initial shot from KC Herne.
The Spartans would rebound and level the scoring just over three minutes later.
Riley Nichols tallied her second goal of the season as she swiped in a perfectly placed pass right in front of the crease from
Alex Johnson, tying the game at three.
With the game tied at the end of regulation, the Spartans would come out victorious during the 3-on-3 overtime period. Harris collected her rebound to score her fourth goal of the season at the 1:16 mark of the overtime period to lift the Spartans to their first victory against the Cadets since 2016 and just the second all-time.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow, February 28 as it takes on Norwich at Spartan Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 4 p.m.
