Women’s Hockey Blanked by No. 3 Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Castleton women's hockey team could not get much going in their matchup against No. 3 Elmira College Friday night, conceding a goal in each period en route to a 3-0 loss to the Eagles.

Elmira (9-1-0, 7-0-0 NEHC) wasted no time going on the offensive in this one, getting off four shots in the first three minutes of the game before finally breaking open the scoring at the 3:31 mark. Netminder Kirsten DiCicco made the initial save off an Eagles face-off win, but could not stop the second as Elmira took the early 1-0 lead.

The Spartans (5-4-0, 3-2-0 NEHC) looked much better the remainder of the period, killing three different Eagle powerplays over the remaining 16 minutes to keep it a one-score game entering the first intermission.

Castleton had a great chance to level the score five minutes into the second period when they went on a powerplay after a holding call against Elmira. The Spartans got some good looks from Darby Palisi and Courtney Gauthier, getting four shots on net with the player advantage, but were unable to get anything past the Eagles' Leonie Kuehberger.

As Castleton's powerplay came to an end, Elmira went back to controlling the game and doubled their lead right at the halfway mark, making it a 2-0 game. The Eagles fired off nine shots in a two-minute span, with the 10th sneaking its way past DiCicco for the score.

The sophomore goaltender looked great in the period aside from the one score allowed — she racked up 18 of her 35 saves in the second — and kept the Spartans down just two heading into the final period.

Elmira would score their third and final goal five minutes into the third, and despite going on a six-on-four advantage for nearly two minutes, the Spartans were unable to find a response, resulting in their second consecutive shutout loss.

Castleton will look to get back on track when they face off against William Smith Saturday, Dec. 4, with puck-drop set for 4 p.m.
