RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton women's hockey team was shutout in the championship game of the Spartan Invitational Saturday night, getting outshot 49-14 in the 6-0 loss to the Mules.
Despite Colby (6-1-0, 3-1-0 NESCAC) taking control of the game early, the score remained tied through the majority of the opening period thanks to some great defensive work by the Spartans. However, 16 minutes into the period, the Mules finally broke through with two goals in the span of a minute from Mattie Tremper and Jillian Mazzocca to make it a 2-0 game heading into the first break.
It was more of the same in the second period, as Colby outshot Castleton (5-5-2, 3-2-1 NEHC) 17-4 and tacked on three more goals in the second period to make it a 5-0 game.
Refusing to give in, the Spartans upped their intensity in the third period and got off a game-high seven shots in the frame, including some great looks from
Courtney Gauthier and
Emily Harris that were saved by Colby's Nina Prunster. Instead, it was the Mules adding on their final goal of the game, coming again from Mazzocca to hand Castleton their largest loss of the season.
Castleton will get a break for the holidays before returning to action Tuesday, Jan. 4 with a matchup against St. Michael's College, with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
