SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Castleton University men's hockey team fell in conference action 4-3 at Skidmore Friday night despite holding a late lead. The Spartans netted two goals in the second period to lead heading into the third, but were ultimately upended by the Thoroughbreds' overtime winner.
Skidmore (6-4-1, 3-3-1 NEHC) struck first midway through the first period, but
Stone Stelzl had the answer just a few minutes later to even the game at 1-1.
The Spartan-owned second period would feature goals from
Glenn Wiswell and
Zach Trempner. Wiswell netted his second of the season and 35th of his illustrious career on a power play, moving into a tie for sixth place in the program's history. Trempner now has goals in back-to-back contests as he recently celebrated his first collegiate goal in a win over St. Michael's College.
Skidmore knotted the game at 3-3 at the eight minute mark of the third period, sending the NEHC foes to overtime.
Danny Magnuson netted the game-winner midway through the extra session.
Conner Ladabouche had the Spartans' lone shot on goal in the frame a minute earlier.
Kyle Alaverdy racked up a career-high 58 saves despite taking the loss. 25 of those came in the second period that put Castleton briefly on top.
The Spartans (4-9-1, 0-6-1 NEHC) totaled 17 shots, led by Wiswell with four.
Castleton returns to action Friday, January 7, traveling to Johnson & Wales University.
