ATTLEBORO, Mass. - The Castleton University men's hockey team dropped a 5-4 overtime nail-biter at Johnson & Wales Friday evening. In a back-and-forth affair, both sides netted two goals apiece in the first and second periods before heading to a short-lived extra session.
The Spartans (4-10-1, 0-7-1 NEHC) faced a 1-0 deficit before
Conner Ladabouche put the visitors on the board with his third goal of the season at the 13 minute mark of the opening period.
Kyle Kazeroid's tally in the final minutes of the session would mark the first of three straight Spartan goals. The opening period saw the Spartans put 21 shots on net.
Garneau kicked off a promising second period with his first collegiate goal.
Sam Rennert posted his second of the year less than a minute later to give Castleton a 4-2 edge.
JWU (4-9-0, 2-5-0 NEHC) would answer with back-to-back goals to cap the busy frame and send the conference foes into the final period with a 4-4 deadlock.
Brandon Collett made six saves in the third period to hold off the Wildcats and send the contest to an extra session. JWU's Kevin Bite would need just 19 seconds of the overtime period to net the game-winner.
Collett logged the full 60:19 in his fourth start of the season and made 23 saves. Despite the loss, the Spartans outshot the Wildcats 52-28.
Castleton is back in action Saturday afternoon, capping the weekend with another conference matchup at UMass Boston, beginning at 4 p.m.
