Rider Nets Lone Goal as Men's Hockey Stumbles at Plattsburgh State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Castleton University men's hockey team fell 8-1 on the road to Plattsburgh State in non-conference action Saturday night. Connor Rider scored the Spartans' lone goal.

Rider's tally, his first of the season, came late in the second period. Andrew Barber sent a long pass to Glenn Wiswell, who had just emerged from the box. Wiswell fired a shot and collected his own rebound, sending it to eventual goal scorer.

Finding scoring opportunities early and often, the Cardinals (1-1-0) first found the back of the net just 15 seconds into the contest. Consecutive goals by Bennett Stockdale would send the Spartans (1-1-0) into the first intermission with a 3-0 deficit.

A busy second period featured six total goals. Plattsburgh opened the floodgates in the first minute of the frame and followed with three more goals in the ensuing 13 minutes. Rider brought the score to 7-1 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. The Cardinals would add one more in short handed fashion to deliver the deciding 8-1 margin.

Castleton saw seven power play opportunities, but weren't able to convert one. Plattsburgh scored on two of their five chances.

Brandon Collett made his first start of the season and registered 24 saves in just over 33 minutes of action. Freshman Dominic Rodrigue entered for the remainder and posted 17 saves with just one goal allowed in his collegiate debut.

Shots sided 49-21 in Plattsburgh's favor.

Castleton returns to action Friday, November 5 to take on Saint Anselm College at Spartan Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
