RUTLAND, Vt. - The Castleton University men's hockey team fell 3-2 to Saint Anselm College Friday evening at Spartan Arena. With all five goals coming in the second period,
Stone Stelzl and
Anton Tarvainen provided the tallies for Castleton.
The action-packed five goal second period would heat up nearly six minutes in when Saint Anselm claimed a 1-0 lead. The advantage would hold until Stelzl evened the game at 1-1 midway through. The sophomore gathered a pass from
Zach Papapetros, raced down the ice with
Alex Maunula by his side, and snuck a wrister past Rams netminder Nick Howard just in front of the crease. It marked Stelzl's first of the year.
Saint Anselm responded with back-to-back goals in a span of just over two minutes. Alec Grace netted the eventual game-winner 14 minutes into the period.
Tarvainen capped the fast-paced period with his second goal of the season. Papapetros was credited with an assist on that goal as well, giving him his first multi-point performance. Tarvainen's tally came in five-on-three fashion as
Glenn Wiswell attempted attempted a slap shot from the right circle and the Sipoo, Finland product was positioned in front of the net for an unstoppable redirection with just three seconds remaining in the period.
Kyle Alaverdy made his second start of the season and nearly went the full 60, logging 59 minutes and 13 seconds. He posted 38 saves, including 15 in the third period to keep the Spartans within striking distance. On the other side, Howard totaled 31 saves on 33 shots faced.
Castleton returns to action tomorrow night, battling SUNY Canton on the road. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
