CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team wrapped up their 2021 season on a high note, besting Bridgewater State 4-2 in front of the home fans Friday night.
Sophomore
Emily Harris entered the game just two goals shy of setting a new program record for goals in a single season and took care of business against the Bears, scoring all four of the Spartans' goals to secure the win and add her name to the history books.
It took just two minutes for Harris to tally her first goal, scoring off of the team's second corner of the day.
Kaitlin Bardellini sent the ball in to
Madelyn Cote, who took a touch and found a cutting Harris. The England-native controlled the ball, cut back around a Bear's defender and backhanded the ball up and into the cage to make it a 1-0 game.
Bridgewater State leveled the game in the 8
th minute off a rebound, but it was Harris giving Castleton (7-11, 5-7 LEC) the lead back and breaking the program record before the first quarter was over.
The sophomore's second score of the day came on a reset with just over a minute left. Harris took the ball just outside the circle and combined with
Madelyn Cote before rifling a shot into the bottom corner of the cage, giving Castleton back the lead after one and breaking the program record set almost 10 years ago.
Harris would complete the hat trick — her fourth of the season — off of an outlet pass from Bardellini in the second quarter to put the Spartans up 3-1 entering halftime, and scored her fourth and final goal with just under three minutes to go in the third.
The Bears (5-12, 3-9 LEC) would get one back before the fourth quarter to make it a two-score game, but Castleton controlled the entirety of the final frame en route to the 4-2 win, conlcuding their 2021 season.
