Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon with a 67-55 loss to the Little East Conference's top team, Eastern Connecticut State, at Glenbrook Gym.
Despite the loss, Castleton secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament and will host Keene State Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Glenbrook Gym. The Spartans concluded the regular season 15-10 overall and 10-6 in LEC action. EastConn finishes the year 21-4 overall and 14-2 in league play to secure the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament as well as a first-round bye.
Castleton shot 36.8 percent from the floor in the loss, knocking down 21-of-57 from the field. Castleton struggled from three-point land, making just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Warriors were lights-out from deep, making 7-of-15 from three while knocking down 52.3 percent (23-of-44) from the field. Both sides were efficient at the free-throw line, with Castleton hitting 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) and EastConn making 14-of-18 (77.8 percent). The Warriors won the rebounding battle, 33-25, but turned it over 19 times to Castleton's 13. The Spartans had a 16-10 edge in points off turnovers as well as a 36-24 edge in points in the paint.
Emilee Bose had a team-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added three rebounds and three steals to her line. Elise Magro chipped in nine points, four assists and three steals while Brooke Raiche had eight points and five rebounds. Alexis Quenneville had seven points for the Spartans on her Senior Day while fellow senior Katlyn Toomey added five points and three rebounds. Kylie Wright had eight points and four rebounds off the bench.
All five Warrior starters reached double figures scoring, led by Anna Barry's 16-points. Barry also added 12 rebouinds for a double-double and racked up eight blocks in the contest. Danielle O'Brien and Lizzy Cretella had 11 points each, while Julie Keckler and Mya Villard had 10 apiece.
The Warriors led big after the first quarter, closing the frame on a 10-0 run to lead 25-11 heading to the second. Castleton's defense stiffened in the frame and allowed the offense to cut into the lead. Castleton worked the deficit back to just eight points following a 9-1 run that made it 36-28. EastConn added a pair of buckets before the break, however, taking a 40-28 edge into halftime.
Castleton had an early 5-0 run in the third quarter that made it a 43-33 game, but the Warriors answered with four straight points to push their lead back to 14, 47-43. With Castleton trailing by 16 late in the third, Magro took the ball coast-to-coast in less than six seconds to finish a layup and the foul shot with just 0.1 seconds showing on the clock, cutting the lead to 53-40 heading to the fourth quarter.
Neither side could put together a run in the fourth quarter, as EastConn held Castleton at bay and used its stout defense to prevent a Spartan comeback. Castleton had a 5-0 spurt at one point to make it a 10-point game after a three-point play by Wright and a layup by Gwyn Tatton, but the Spartans never got any closer as the Warriors closed out the game by a final score of 67-55.
