Box Score FARMINGTON, Maine – The Castleton University women's basketball team picked up its second win in as many games to start the season Friday night, taking down the University of Maine at Farmington by a final score of 72-56 at Len MacPhee Court.
The offensive output was Castleton's highest since January 30, 2018, when the Spartans posted 82 points against NVU-Lyndon (then Lyndon State). Castleton is now 2-0 in the earlygoing while UMF sits at 0-1.
The Spartans shot 35.1 percent (26-of-74) as a team from the field, but knocked down 46.2 percent (6-of-13) of their three-point attempts. The Beavers went 21-of-65 (32.3 percent) as a team, but struggled from three-point range as they made just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent). Both teams had ample opportunities at the free-throw stripe, with Castleton making 14-of-21 and UMF knocking down 11-of-25. Castleton won the rebounding battle, 56-43.
Three Spartans reached double digits on the day, as Alexis Quenneville led all scorers with 21 points. The senior drained 5-of-8 from three as part of a 7-for-16 day shooting and added seven rebounds and three steals. Emilee Bose added 19 points and eight rebounds, while Elise Magro notched her first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Magro also had four blocks in the win. Katlyn Toomey also hauled in 10 rebounds, and Kylie Wright added six points and five boards off the bench.
UMF boasted three double-digit scorers of its own, two of whom came off the bench. Alex Bessey gave the Beavers 12 points in 23 minutes off the bench, while McKenna Brodeur dropped 11 points in 17 minutes as a reserve. Page Brown led all Beavers with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and reeled in a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Spartans jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter, leading by as many as 14 in the first frame after Quenneville buried a three. The Beavers whittled the lead down to 11 at the end of the quarter, but the Spartans remained in control from there.
The lead quickly grew to 18 points just three minutes into the second quarter as Raiche knocked down a three to cap a 7-0 run. UMF continued to battle throughout the frame, using an 8-2 run to narrow the gap to 39-27 with 1:18 left before half. A pair of free throws by Toomey with 12 seconds remaining sent the Spartans to the locker room ahead, 41-27.
Castleton came out of the locker room on a tear, going on a 7-0 run in the opening two minutes of the third quarter to take a 48-27 edge. Castleton led 58-40 with 3:19 to play in the third after Wright hit a pair of free throws, but UMF closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to send the game to the final 10 minutes with Castleton ahead, 58-46.
Castleton closed out the contest strong, adding to the lead in the final 10 minutes to claim a 72-56 win. Quenneville knocked down two more threes while Bose added five points and five rebounds in the quarter to keep the Beavers at bay.
The Spartans close out the weekend trip to Maine with a 1 p.m. matchup against Thomas College at UMF.
