Women's Tennis Defeats Southern Maine, Wins First Ever LEC Match

CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Castleton University women's tennis team picked up its first ever Little East Conference (LEC) victory as it defeated Southern Maine 7-2 Saturday afternoon at the Castleton Tennis Courts. 

The Spartans quickly jumped out ahead, winning all three doubles matches to go up 3-0 heading into singles action. The first flight of Megan Nadler and Regina Marchese gave the Spartans a spark as they defeated Samantha Harden and Ciara Richards, 8-5. The third flight of Alexis Curley and Grace Sharkey faced little resistance in an 8-2 win over Tracey Edwards and Jacqui Hallisey.

The second flight of Emily Miller and Aliza Bogner would need to win a tiebreaker at 8-8 to give the Spartans the sweep at doubles. Miller and Bogner won the tiebreaker 7-2 to win the match 9-8 over Gabby Brooks and Eden Martin. 

After taking a commanding lead after doubles action, the Spartans looked to keep rolling heading into singles. Miller dropped only four games to earn the 6-2, 6-2 win at second singles while Marchese took charge in a 6-1, 6-1 win to extend the Spartans lead. 

Sharkey and Curley would solidify the victory as they both won their singles matches. Sharkey picked up the 6-3, 6-3 win at fifth singles while Curley dropped only four games in a 6-1, 6-3 win at sixth singles.

Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans was Nadler dropping a 7-5, 6-4 decision at first singles and Megan Hunt losing a third set tiebreaker in a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 loss at third singles. 

With the victory today, the Spartans improve to 3-8 (1-6 LEC) while the Huskies fall to 1-9 (0-7 LEC).

Women's tennis will return to action on Tuesday, October 8 as it takes on UMass Boston in a Little East Conference matchup starting at 4 p.m.
