Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University field hockey team defeated the Westfield State University Owls 3-2 in overtime on Thursday evening at Spartan Stadium. Castleton improves to 2-4, while the Owls are now 1-3.
Gabriella Hunt scored the second of her two goals with just over four minutes gone in the first overtime to lift the Spartans and complete the comeback. The freshman gained a step on the defender before Rachel Holland found her. Hunt slapped the ball past the goalkeeper for the sudden victory.
The Granville, N.Y. native had herself a career day – scoring five points – as she played a part in each of the Spartan goals. Hunt's scores were the first two of her career.
With just 19 seconds remaining in regulation and Castleton trailing 2-1, Hunt pushed her way through a scrum of players, found the ball and fired into the cage to tie the game and send it to extra time.
Just six minutes prior, Cydney Jeffrey got the Spartans on the board as she redirected an entry pass from Hunt. It was the Manchester, Vt. native's second tally of 2017.
Castleton dominated on offense throughout, despite not scoring until late. As a team, they attempted 25 penalty corners and 27 shots. The team effort was anchored by a strong defensive presence as the Spartans limited the Owls to just two penalty corners and five shots.
Leah Holland earned her first win of the season after entering the contest at halftime. She clocked 39:06 in the cage, while Tashia Pashby-Rockwood got the start. The latter played the entire first half, allowing two goals and stopping one shot.
Field hockey returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as they host the Oneonta Red Dragons at Spartan Stadium.
