Spartans Split Doubleheader at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton women's volleyball team split a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the U. of Southern Maine.

The doubleheader split moved the Spartans to 1-2 on the season, while UMPI fell to 1-3 and Southern Maine improved to 3-1.

The Spartans got off to a quick start, sweeping the U. of Maine at Presque Isle, 3-0, but was halted by the same score in their second match of the day against the host, Southern Maine.

Cassidy Tedeschi posted strong numbers on the day, combining for 17 kills and 11 digs to go along with a pair of service aces over her two matches. J'Leen Diaz was another leader for the Spartans, tallying 15 digs on the day and 11 kills in the sweep of UMPI. Alex Madsen racked up 32 assists over her two matches today, while Kimberly Jackson recorded 17 digs.

In the first contest, Castleton won in straight sets: 25-21, 25-10, 25-20. Tedeschi recorded 13 kills in the contest while making just two errors, leading to a .423 kill percentage. Madsen also racked up 25 assists in the matchup against UMPI, while Olivia Perkins registered 10 kills.

The second match of the day did not bode as well for Castleton, as Southern Maine picked up a three-set win. The Huskies won a tight first set, 25-15, before cruising in sets two and three, 25-11 and 25-7, respectively.

Madsen collected seven assists over the three sets, while Tedeschi had a team-high four kills to pair with six digs. Diaz led the team with seven digs, and Jackson posted three kills with five digs in the loss.

Castleton returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when it hosts Southern Vermont in Glenbrook Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.
