Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton field hockey team defeated Daniel Webster this afternoon at Spartan Stadium by a final score of 10-1.
With win, the Spartans improve to 2-1 on the season while Daniel Webster drops to 0-1.
Junior Emily Lowell recorded her first career hat trick to lead a Spartans offense that notched goals from six different players this afternoon. The 10-1 win was the largest margin of victory for the Spartans since 2013, which was the last time Castleton finished atop of the North Atlantic Conference.
The Spartans came out of the gates quickly, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes of the game. Cassidy Auger found the back of the cage for the first time this season, sandwiched between two goals from Lowell. Wells and Spittle each added assists on Lowell's goals.
Senior Haley Spittle added a goal at the 19:00 mark of the first half before goals from freshmen Mia Sanborn and Cydney Jeffrey at 22:48 and 31:47 gave the Spartans a 6-0 lead going into the break. The goal from Sanborn, assisted by Mariah Linnett, was the first of her career. Anna-Michelle Fabian tallied her first points of the season with an assist on Jeffrey's goal.
Castleton collected four more goals in the second half. Lowell added her third of the afternoon just 1:48 into the second stanza and Sarah Wells followed with her team-leading fourth goal of the season less than a minute later. Sanborn became the second Spartan to record a multi-goal performance after a perfect pass came from freshman Kate West at the 12:41 mark of the second half.
After Daniel Webster got on the board with 17 minutes remaining in the contest, Rachel Holland scored the final goal of the afternoon at the 29:40 mark of the second half to give the Spartans the 10-1 lead that would result in the final score.
Lowell led the Spartans with six points on the day. Spittle and Sanborn both finished with four points. Freshman Tashia Pashby-Rockwood notched her fist-career win with five saves in the cage, including a tremendous full-extention, diving stop on Daniel Webster's Brittany Tierney who struck through the Spartans defense and had a clear shot on goal.
Castleton will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Spartans play on the road for the first time this season at Mount Holyoke.
