Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's tennis team earned their first victory over Plymouth St. in three years on Wednesday evening, taking down the Panthers by a final of 6-3.
The win moves the Spartans to 4-1, while Plymouth St. drops to 1-4 on the season.
The Spartans got a boost from the top doubles pairing of Sara Novenstern and Jackie Lisak, who battled from behind to pull off a 9-7 win. At second flight doubles, Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk took Irene Ireme and Peyton Smith to the very end, falling by a score of 9-7. In No. 3 doubles action, Diane Benedicto and Gabrielle Welch fell 8-6 to the pairing of Megan Wheeler and Megan Wallace.
The Spartans would turn their day around in singles play, taking five out of the six matches. Novenstern cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kelley Corson. Lisak won both sets by a score of 6-1 over Ireme, while Bannister was victorious 7-5, 6-0. Benedicto won in three sets over Wallace, while Kruk defeated Smith 7-6, 6-1.
Castleton will be back in action this Sunday when they travel to Green Mountain College. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
