Castleton Locks Down Thomas 60-30

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans allowed just 14 second-half points as they pulled away for a 60-30 victory over Thomas on Saturday afternoon in Glenbrook Gym.

Castleton shot just 36.1 percent for the contest but limited the Terriers to 21.4 percent shooting and out rebounded them 48-31, including an impressive 20 offensive boards. The Spartans improve to 6-1 and 2-1 in the North Atlantic Conference with the victory while Thomas drops to 1-5 and 1-2 in conference play.

Senior Ali Jones was in double figures with 11 points, four assists and two rebounds while limiting Thomas' leading scorer Katie McAllister to 13 points below her season average. Bryanna duPont chipped in eight points, ten rebounds and one steal while Lindsay Sabo added seven points, five rebounds and four steals. Freshman Ajla Medic contributed five points and two rebounds off the bench in three minutes.

The Terriers were led by Ashleigh Gagne, who totaled ten points, six rebounds and one block, while McAllister was limited to just three points on 1-for-9 shooting with eight turnovers. Tess McClenehan added four points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Castleton jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a jumper by duPont at 8:30 and led 10-2 midway through the period. Thomas did make a 5-3 run to close within five with 1:04 left, but Sabo swished two free throws with 14 seconds remaining for the 15-8 advantage after one.

Andrea Trudeau connected on a pair of free throws to open the second quarter and four minutes later a jumper from Amanda Beatty stretched the Castleton lead to 22-9. The teams traded baskets over the final five minutes of the period, including a layup by McAllister with nine seconds left to trim the Spartan halftime lead to 28-16.

Castleton continued to hound the Terriers in the second half and outscored them 16-9 in the third quarter, getting five points from Sabo before Desroches and duPont ended the period with baskets for a 44-25 advantage. The Spartans subbed liberally in the fourth quarter while outscoring Thomas by a 16-5 margin to finish with a 30-point victory.

Castleton returns to action on Thursday when the team hosts Johnson St. at 5:30 pm in team's final home game of the semester.
