Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton women's hockey team picked up a shutout victory in a non-conference matchup with Williams on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Arena by a final score of 2-0.
Jess Cameron posted a 46-save shutout for the 8-1-1 Spartans, while Brianna Keats and Lisa Kilroy each found the back of the net for the home team. Williams falls to 2-2-0 on the season with the loss.
After back-and-forth play for a majority of the first frame, Castleton got on the board with just 24 seconds remaining when Aimee Briand put a shot on goal that was originally saved, but Keats was there to finish the play to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
The Spartans would tack on a second goal early in the middle period, when Rachel Bombardier sent a pass to Hannah Wright at the left point. Wright ripped a slap shot towards goal that Kilroy deflected into the back of the net, doubling the Castleton lead to 2-0.
Entering the third period with a heavy shot advantage, Williams would look to break into the goal column for the first time in the contest. Cameron had other ideas, as the senior posted 14 saves in the final frame to keep her team on top.
With 3:03 remaining, the Ephs pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, however the advantage would be negated as a Williams player took a penalty with 1:09 to play. The Spartans had multiple looks at an open net as time ran down, however the Ephs were there to steer each one out of harms way to keep the score at 2-0 as the final horn sounded.
Cameron recorded her second shutout of the year for the Spartans, following up a 60-save performance earlier in the week with 46 saves in the Sunday matinee victory. Christina Cleroux suffered her second loss of the season, stopping 15 shots in the game.
Neither squad could score on the power play, as the Spartans failed to convert on their late chance, while Williams could not find a way to score on two early power-play opportunities. The Ephs held a 46-17 shot advantage in the contest, while also winning 23 out of the 40 faceoffs (58%) in the game.
Castleton is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 12 when the team travels to second-ranked Middlebury to take on the Cougars. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
