Castleton Earns Sweep on Senior Day

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans didn't give up a set on Sunday during senior day, beating Lyndon and Johnson St. by matching 3-0 scores with each of the team's seniors coming up with big plays throughout the day. Green Mountain and Lyndon each won a match while Johnson St. when 0-2 on the day.

All six Castleton seniors saw action on Saturday and found a way to contribute as the team improved to 11-7 and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. The 11 wins is the second-most in program history, just behind a 14-win season back in 2009. Today senior Amanda Chambers also became the first player in program history to surpass 1000 career digs. She finished the day with 1,015 for her career after recording 18 in six sets.

Castleton came out firing and earned a 25-14 victory in the opening set against Lyndon. The Spartans appeared poised to take the second set leading 24-20, however, Lyndon came back to tie it up 24 apiece. Kills by Brittany Brayman and Chambers gave Castleton the 26-24 win. The Spartans took the third set 25-18.

The team finished with 68 total digs, as four different players had at least ten and the squad hit .185 with 39 kills. Brayman finished with 12 digs, to go along with 13 kills and two aces, while Kristi Lawless and Chambers led the team with 13 apiece. J'Leen Diaz chipped in 10 digs, with Shelby Smyth registering three assists, three aces and two digs in one set. Michaela Babineau added four assists and three digs in the first set as well.

Gweyneth Stahl led the team with an impressive triple-double of 13 assists, 11 digs and ten kills. Ashley Barksi added 13 digs and three aces while Laura Drake contributed eight assists, eight digs and seven kills while hitting .368.

The Spartans made it a sweep by hitting .325 with 43 digs in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 win over Johnson St. to improve to 11-7 overall.

Chambers led the offense by hitting .556 with ten kills and five digs. Cassidy Tedeschi contributed seven kills, three digs and two aces while Alex Madsen dished off a team-high 17 assists. Freshman Morgan Valley registered four aces in the final set and Diaz had five kills, five aces and 14 digs in a good all-around effort. Kaylee Pratt contributed six kills in the match and finished with 15 on the day. 

Once again, Laughlin led her team with 11 kills and hit .259. Eimly Peterson dished off ten assists to go with six digs while Binham recorded 12 digs and six assists. Laurel Hubbert-Sever added two kills and two aces.
