Spartans Fall at Keene St., 8-1

KEENE, N.H. – The Castleton field hockey team fell in a non-conference matchup at Keene St. on Tuesday evening by a final score of 8-1.

The Spartans drop to 4-8 with the loss, while Keene St. picks up their seventh straight victory and move to 11-4 on the season.

Meeghan Doris made eight stops in the cage for the Spartans, while Sarah Wells recorded the lone Spartan goal.

The first half was all Keene St., as the Spartans failed to record a shot in the half. Sami Smith and Kendall Brown each scored twice for the Owls in the half, while Marita Brothers, Casi Smith, and Hayley Dolan also netted goals. Keene St. held a 15-0 shot advantage in the half, as well as a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.

In the second half, the Owls got on the board once more when Julia Babbitt found the back of the cage to stretch the lead to 8-0. The Spartans would get on the board late, when Wells found the back of the cage on an assist from Haley Spittle.

In goal, Doris made eight stops, while Owls' goalie Meaghan Dwyer earned the win, facing no shots. Kendra Lonergan allowed a goal on the only shot she faced for Keene St.

The Owls outshot Castleton 20-3, putting 16 shots on goal to the Spartans' one. Keene St. also held a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners in the contest.

Castleton is back in action on Saturday, hosting Husson in a North Atlantic Conference matchup. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
