Box Score Johnson, Vt. - Castleton started 2014 on a strong note, getting a gutsy effort from senior Meghan Susslin to earn a 5-4 victory over Johnson St. on Saturday afternoon in the season-opener for both squads.
Susslin took part in the only three-set singles match, playing at Castleton's top spot. The senior dropped the first set 6-4 but came back to dominate the second set 6-1. In the final set, with the match on the line she earned the 6-4 win to lift Castleton to victory.
The Spartans opened the match by winning at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The duo of Monika Plante and Olga McIntyre earned an 8-4 victory and then Taylor Reynolds and Kaydeen Juaire won 8-3 at third doubles.
In singles Castleton earned a pair of straight set wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles. Mcintyre won by a 6-2, 6-2 margin and freshman Gabrielle Keyser beat Nicole Monik 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The Spartans moved to 1-0 win the win and return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Plattsburgh St.
