In the first period, the Huskies struggled to stay out of the box, taking four penalties to give the Spartans several opportunities with the man-advantage. Castleton capitalized twice in the period with the extra man to take a 2-0 lead. Rachel Bombardier redirected a shot from Lisa Buratynski that trickled past Nia Kelly to put Castleton ahead. Later in the frame, Lisa Kilroy buried a rebound to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.
In the second, Castleton continued to apply pressure as they built up their lead. Taylor Skelton added to the lead with a short-handed goal, her second of the season. The forward gathered a rebound in the left slot and buried it to put Castleton ahead 3-0. Two minutes later, Anna Daniels found the net for her 12th goal of the season. Nicoline Jensen snatched a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated it deep before crossing it in front of the goal mouth where Daniels swept it in to put the Spartans up 4-0.
In the final minute of the second, Southern Maine got on the board with a goal from Cassandra Sherman. Erin Ferrara ripped a heater from the point that Stephens deflected away, but the loose puck trickled right to Sherman who finished the play to make it 4-1 at the second intermission.
In the third, the Spartans relented slightly, only mustering four shots on goal in the period. Southern Maine managed to send six attempts on net, but Paula Stephens was up to the task, turning away all six shots. The final horn gave the Spartans a 4-1 victory, their first over the Huskies this season.
