Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Castleton was no match for the third-ranked team in the nation, falling to No. 3 Middlebury 13-0 on Tuesday night.
The Panthers outshot the Spartans 35-1 in the contest and had a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners as they improved to 13-1. Castleton, meanwhile, dropped to 1-13 on the year.
Just 1:33 into the game, Catherine Fowler scored with a shot to the top left corner after a rebound. Olivia Jurkowitz made it a 2-0 game when a ball she sent into the area was deflected high into the cage off a defender's stick. Fowler netted her team-leading 12th of the season at the 8:44 mark, working a give-and-go with Pam Schulman on a penalty corner.
Josie Trichka gave her team a 4-0 lead before finding Pam Schulman for a quick turn-and-shoot goal to make it a 5-0 contest at the 13:17 mark. Annie Leonard scored the next two goals, the first on her own rebound and the second on a sweeping shot after a feed from Alyssa DiMaio.
Middlebury added two more first half goals and four in the second on its way to the victory. Trichka and Leonard each finished with a hat trick, while Jurkowitz and Fowler had two goals apiece. Schulman, Audrey Quirk and Caroline Knapp each tallied solo goals.
Emily Knapp earned the win with no first half saves, while Evangeline Dunphy made one second-half stop. Jess Galatioto made 15 saved in the cage for Castleton.
The Spartans travel to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday for a 1 pm game, with a trip to the North Atlantic Conference Tournament on the line.
