Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans put on one of their most impressive performances of the year in a 3-0 sweep of visiting SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday evening in Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton hit .227 overall for the match and had five players with at least five four kills as the team totaled 34 and recorded 55 digs to earn the victory and improve to 7-11 on the year. The Fighting Tigers, meanwhile, finished the match with 35 kills, 45 digs and nine service aces as they dropped to 10-12 overall.
Amanda Chambers was all over the court for the Spartans. She hit .312 with seven kills, 13 digs and a pair of block assists to pace the team. Cassidy Tedeschi added eight kills while J'Leen Diaz had 12 digs, three kills and three aces. Michaela Babineau dished off a team-high 15 assists.
Kim Cordova was strong in the back for the Fighting Tigers with 17 digs, while Abigail Wilson had a team-high nine kills and hit .294. Raven Worthing added seven kills, eight digs and three aces while Sarah Ruggles recorded a match-best 26 assists.
The first set was back and forth with the two teams drawing even multiple times in the match's first 20 points. Tied at 13-13, the Spartans earned back-to-back points to take a 15-13 advantage. Cobleskill pulled back within one, but Castleton went on a 5-2 run to take a 20-15 lead. Then leading 23-19 the Spartans received a kill from Babineau and a block from Tedeschi and Kaylee Pratt to earn the 25-19 win.
Castleton jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set, punctuated by a kill from Kelly Mills. However, the Fighting Tigers came back to tie it at 14 apiece on a 3-0 run and then took a 16-15 lead. The Spartans countered and the two teams traded points until three straight by Castleton pushed its lead to 21-18 and the home team held on for the 25-22 win.
In the third set neither team could gain an advantage early, though a 4-0 run eventually put the Spartans on top 15-9. Cobleskill managed to claw within one at 17-16, but a kill from Pratt and an ace by Kristi Lawless put the team out of harms way. Castleton finished with the 25-21 win off a kill by Diaz.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they travel to Green Mountain to face the Eagles and Colby-Sawyer at 4 & 6 pm.
