WENHAM, Mass. – Castleton earned a split on Saturday, taking care of Mass. Maritime in four tough sets before falling to Gordon 3-1 on Saturday in the Bennett Center at Gordon College.

The Spartans looked in control of the match after taking a 2-0 lead, but the Buccaneers rebounded for a win in the third set to make things interesting. Castleton was able to seal its sixth win of the season with a 25-13 win in the fourth and final set.

Castleton went on an early run in the first set, but the Bucs pulled close late. However, the Spartans pulled out points down the stretch and won 25-18. Castleton went up two sets to none following a 25-12 victory in the second in which their attack seemed to finish off points with every opportunity.

Mass. Maritime regrouped after the early deficit and came out of the third set aggressive. The Spartans couldn't stop the suddenly hot Bucs and they drew within a set, 25-16. Castleton was able to finish off its opponent in the fourth set with a more controlled attack.

Charleen Klangos led the Bucs with six kills and 16 digs, while also notching a service ace. Libero Stephanie O'Connor paced the defense with 25 digs.

Amanda Chambers led Castleton with nine kills on the afternoon. Kaylee wasn't far behind with eight kills of her own, while Kimberly Jackson pitched in six. Jackson led all Spartans with 22 digs, while Kristi Lawless had 20 digs on the back line as well. Shelby Smyth and Alex Madsen split setter duties with 14 and 10 assists apiece.

Gordon came out firing with a 25-10 win over the Spartans in the opening set. The Fighting Scots looked strong in the second set but Castleton closed it to 17-14. However, they gave up just one more point in earning a 25-15 win.

The third set had an odd flow as the Spartans got out to a big lead early—16-8—before Gordon fought back. Ultimately several time delays combined with some finishes by the Spartans' attack did the Fighting Scots in, 25-18.

Gordon rebounded in the fourth set. Despite a slow start to the game, the Fighting Scots tied the game at 10 apiece and never trailed again on the way to a 25-17 win.

J'Leen Diaz led the Spartans with six kills and a service ace. Chambers continued her strong day with 19 digs and three total blocks while Michaela Babineau paced the attack for the Spartans with 11 assists.

Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when they host SUNY Cobleskill.
