Spartans Split on Sunday

Gorham, Maine – Castleton opened the day with a dominating 3-0 victory over Maine Machias, but couldn't take down host Southern Maine, falling to the Huskies 3-1 on Sunday in Hill Gymnasium. 

In the team's opener, the Spartans earned their first sweep of the season, taking down Maine-Machias 25-22, 25-7 and 25-18. Castleton recorded three more kills than the Clippers and out-dug them by an impressive 51-30 margin. 

Brittany Brayman led the offense with nine kills on 25 attempts and recorded 13 digs. Shelby Smyth dished off 15 assists and had five service aces while Amanda Chambers was key on defense with 13 digs. 

Facing a tough Southern Maine squad, the Spartans lost the first two sets 25-18 and 25-12 before rebounding for a hard-fought 28-26 victory in the third set. Castleton's comeback attempt came up short as the team dropped the final set 25-19. Castleton out-dug the Huskies 63-55 and recorded 14 service aces in the contest. 

Brayman once again led the offense with six kills, and added team-highs of 14 digs and four service aces. Chambers added five kills, ten digs and three aces while Smyth dished off 14 assists. 

The Spartans sit at 2-2 now and return to action on Saturday when they travel to Smith for matches against Lasell and Western New England.
