Spartans Sweep Mass. Maritime Twice

Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans put forth their most impressive offensive performance of the season, dominating Massachusetts Maritime with a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday in Glenbrook Gym.

Castleton totaled at least 30 kills in both matches on Saturday, including a season-high 38 in the day's second match as the team improve to 5-7 on the year. Conversely, then held the Buccaneers to just 27 kills total on the afternoon as Mass. Maritime dropped to 2-13 on the season.

In the opener the offense took center stage, hitting .348 and taking the match 25-10, 25-5 and 25-14. Castleton recorded 38 digs in the match as they held the Buccaneers to a .000 attack percentage and just 17 kills. The Spartans also had 16 aces, with five coming from Shelby Smyth.

Cassidy Tedeschi led the offense with nine kills and hit .353 while also recording three digs and three aces. Breannon Meuse hit .500 with seven kills and added four aces. Amanda Chambers led the team with 14 digs, along with five kills and four aces, while Michaela Babineau facilitated the offense with 10 assists.

Castleton jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the opening set and pushed the lead to 11 at 16-5 before finishing with the 25-10 victory. In the second set, the Spartans actually fell behind 2-0. However, they tied it up 3-3 and then scored eight straight to push their lead to 11-3. They continued to hit well and finished the set on a 14-0 run for the 25-5 win.

In the final set, Castleton fell behind early 5-2. The Spartans came back to tie it at seven apiece and then extended their lead to 13-7. They continued to press their advantage, finishing with the 25-14 victory to win the match.

The Spartans opened the second match strong, registering 12 kills without an error as they captured the first set by an impressive 25-9 margin. In the second set Castleton jumped out to a 14-4 lead behind a three early aces by Alex Madsen. The Spartans pushed their advantage to 22-9 before finishing with the 25-13 win.

In the final set, Castleton captured five of the first six points for the 5-1 lead. Mass. Maritime pulled within two, 7-5, but Lawless served the Spartans to 13 consecutive points to extend their lead to 20-5. Castleton scored five of the final seven points for the 25-7 victory.

Brittany Brayman hit .529 with ten kills and three aces while Amanda Chambers added 15 digs and four kills. Kaylee Pratt added seven kills on ten attempts while Tedeschi recorded nine. Madsen had a good game with 15 assists and three aces.

Castleton returns to action next Saturday when the team faces Johnson St. and Lyndon St. at Green Mountain College, beginning at 2 pm.
