Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine – The Spartans earned their second consecutive shutout in North Atlantic Conference action, silencing Thomas 4-0 on Saturday.
The Spartans improve to 2-0 in the NAC and 4-4 overall with the win while the Terriers drop to 1-1 in the conference with the loss. The action-filled first half saw back and forth action with both teams having scoring opportunities. Brittany Premo nearly gave Thomas the lead just two minutes into the contest, picking up her own rebound only to have her shot blocked by a Castleton defender.
Shawna Pinsonault started the Castleton scoring with a goal just inside the circle seven minutes into the game. Minutes later, Stephanie Bardell netted in a goal off a by Brynn Cayia to give Castleton a 2-0 lead going into the half.
Castleton kept the pressure on the Terriers in the second half and Rachel Preusser buried a backhanded shot 12 minutes in to extend the lead to 3-0. With the score she became Castleton's all-time leading goal scorer with 71. The senior now owns Spartan career records for goals (71), assists (29) and points (171).
Freshman Sarah Heffernan concluded the scoring with four minutes left in the game to pull it out of reach. Jessica Galatioto denied all six of the Terriers shots on goal in the Spartan's victory. Terrier goalkeeper Sofia Sourgiadakis had 11 saves in the losing effort.
With the loss, Thomas falls to 0-6 against Castleton in the last six years.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow when they face Maine Farmington at 12 pm.
