Box Score 2 Castleton, Vt. – The Spartans started off strong on Saturday, winning the first set of the day, however they couldn't capture another as they fell to Gordon 3-1 and then SUNY Canton by a 3-0 margin in Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton played arguably its best set of the year in taking down Gordon 25-20 in the opening set. The Spartans then opened the second set with a 12-9 lead and was even on the verge of victor at 24-23. However, the Fighting Scots scored the final three points to finish with the 26-24 win.
In the third set, Castleton jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held the advantage until Gordon eventually tied it up 15-15. The Fighting Scots started to pull away and sat just a point away from victory at 24-21; however, a Gordon service error and consecutive attack errors tied it up at 24. The teams went traded points before two straight by the Fighting Scots gave them the 27-25 win. The Spartans opened the fourth set strong, 7-3, but couldn't maintain the advantage and Gordon eventually came back for the 25-19 victory.
Amanda Chambers lead the team with seven kills and finished with a match-high 22 digs. Kristi Lawless added 19 digs while Brittany Brayman recorded six kills and 13 digs. Michaela Babineau had a team-high seven assists along with ten digs.
Jessica Burdick led Gordon with 14 kills and seven digs while Chelsie Clemens was second on the team with seven kills. Lauren Kranyak recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 13 digs.
In the Spartans second match of the day they struggled offensively and SUNY Canton took the match 25-10, 25-10, 25-12. Castleton finished with five kills in the match, compared to 42 for the Roos. Morgan Bills led all players with 12 kills and an impressive 1.000 hitting percentage for Canton while Mackenzie Mynter added 32 assists and six aces.
Chambers led Castleton with nine digs in the match while Lawless added six. Cassidy Tedeschi had two kills and Brayman recorded three kills on 14 attempts. Breannon Muse chipped in with four digs.
Castleton returns to action on Friday evening at 6 pm when the team hosts Green Mountain.
