Spartans Shoot Past Badgers 84-67

Johnson, Vt. – Castleton earned its fourth straight victory, dominating the first half and then cruising to an 84-67 victory over Johnson St. on Tuesday evening in North Atlantic Conference action. 

The Spartans jumped out to a 53-21 halftime edge by shooting 67.9 percent from the field and 7-for-11 from beyond the arc as they improved to 13-10 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Castleton finished the game at an impressive 61.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Badgers 35-18. Johnson St. shot 40.0 percent from the field and made ten threes, but it wasn't enough as the team dropped to 8-15 and 6-10 in the NAC. 

Senior Mark Comstock led four players in double figures with 15 points and was one of 12 players to score at least two points. Freshman Chad Copeland continued his strong play, with 12 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Jeremy Odena came off the bench to hit three shots from downtown and finished with 14 points and three rebounds. 

Asim Khan led the Badger offense with 18 points, six steals and five assists. He was joined in double figures by Lester Alexander who had 13 points and Cody Camisa with 12. Camisa also pulled down a team-high eight boards. 

Johnson St. jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first 2:23, however, the Spartans countered with a 15-2 run of their own to grab an 18-9 advantage with 12:17 left. Cory Chase momentarily halted the run with a free throw for the Badgers, but Castleton scored the next 18 points, the final two coming on a layup by Tyler Ackley with 7:37 remaining. 

Trailing 36-10, Camisa ended the scoring drought for Johnson St with a layup. Despite the basket, the Spartan offense continued its assault with a 12-3 run to push the score to 48-15 with 2:43 left. Castleton maintained that advantage and finished with 32-point lead at the break. 

In the second half the teams traded baskets, with a three from Logan White at 13:29 giving the Spartans a 62-34 lead. Castleton continued to keep its lead above 25 over the next seven minutes, though a 14-0 run by Johnson St. cut the lead to 16 with 3:16 left. The Badgers eventually trimmed the Spartan as low nine, 78-67, but Castleton scored the final six points, including four free throws from Corey Kimball, to secure the victory. 

Dammy Mustapha added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench as the Spartan bench outscored Johnson St. 42-22. 

Castleton returns to action on Thursday when the team travels to face New England College at 5:30 pm.
