Spartans Lock Down on Plymouth St. 64-32

Plymouth, N.H. – Castleton took care of business early and cruised to a 64-32 non-conference victory over Plymouth St. on Tuesday evening in Foley Gym. 

Ten different players scored for the Spartans as they shot 34.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Panthers 54-38 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Plymouth St. was held to just 22.9 percent shooting and went 0-for-13 from downtown as the team dropped to 0-4 overall. 

Heather Murdough dominated inside for Castleton, scoring ten points and pulling down 11 rebounds, including four offensive boards. The senior also added three assists and two blocks. Liz Douglass was in double figures with 12 points and five rebounds while Alyssa Leonard added ten points and four rebounds. 

Rosalie Edmonds was the only Panther in double figures, scoring 12 points off the bench while also recording five rebounds and one steal. Tiffany Lewis added four points and six rebounds. 

The Spartans came out strong, opening the game on an 11-0 run over the first 4:54. Bry Bennett put the Panthers on the board with a layup, but Castleton scored ten more in a row, capped off by a Stephanie Bull layup to make it 21-2 with 11:59 left. 

Plymouth St. and the Spartans traded baskets over the next six minutes, as a pair of free throws by Krystin Corliss cut the deficit to 28-10 with 6:02 remaining. The Panthers got as close as 30-15, but a basket by Alyssa Leonard with just over a minute left made it 32-15 going into the break. 

Castleton didn't let up in the second half, opening on a 6-2 run over the first three minutes. The Spartans extended the score to 42-21 at 14:30 and four minutes later it was a 47-24 advantage. Castleton pushed its lead as high as 35 in the final three minutes before finishing with the 32-point victory. 

Shelby LaBarge added eight points and six rebounds off the bench while Jade Desroches finished with six rebounds, five steals, four points and two assists. 

The Spartans return to action on Tue, Dec. 3, when they travel to face Middlebury at 5:30 pm.
