Offensive Explosion Leads Spartans

Plymouth, N.H. - The Spartans put on a scoring clinic, lighting the lamp a season-high seven times on their way to a win over Plymouth St. Brie Narodowy and Kimberly Gosselin each notched a goal and a pair of assists to lead the Castleton offense in the 7-2 victory.

Paula Stephens finished with 17 saves to earn her third win of the season for the Spartans. Her Plymouth St. counterpart Ali Ponte notched 34 saves in the loss. 

Castleton set the tone in the early going, scoring just 2:42 into the game. Jessica Spidle notched an unassisted goal in the third minute of play to put the Spartans up 1-0 over the Panthers. The Spartans narrowly outshot the Panthers 9-7 in the first frame. 

In the second period, Castleton took over, outshooting the Panthers 20-7 and netting four goals. The visitors netted a power play goal in the first minute of the second frame, Sam Pion drilled a shot past Ponte to put Castleton up 2-0. 

The Panthers came storming back however, scoring a pair of goals in quick succession to tie the game. Allison Collins netted a goal at the 17:20 mark, and Marisa Zamrock followed her up with a short-handed score just 1:06 later to tie the game.

Castleton seemed to take the scores to heart as they rattled off five unanswered scores to finish the game. Michelle Baillargeon notched her first career goal on a power play in the 15th minute of the second frame, and Nicoline Jensen tallied a score just 28 seconds later. Captain Brie Narodowy notched her second goal of the year on a power play with less than two minutes remaining in the period to put the Spartans up 5-2.

In the third, Castleton picked up where they left off as Gosselin netted a goal 58 seconds into the third. Jensen added a second tally with three seconds remaining in the game to give the Spartans the 7-2 victory. 

With the win, Castleton improves to 3-2-0 and opens their ECAC East schedule with a victory. The squad will travel to Gorham, Maine to take on the University of Southern Maine in another ECAC East matchup on Saturday at 1:00pm.
